About Wedding Cost Japan

Who this is for and how the numbers are sourced.

Wedding Cost Japan is a free, English-language calculator and guide for international couples — usually a foreigner marrying a Japanese partner — trying to see what a wedding here actually costs. Unlike a venue's headline quote, it shows net out-of-pocket: gross cost minus the ご祝儀 (goshūgi, gift money) that Japanese guests bring, which self-funds a real portion of a traditional wedding.

How we source the numbers

The backbone is the ゼクシィ結婚トレンド調査 (Zexy Wedding Trend Survey), the widely-cited annual industry survey, with the survey year stated on-page. Venue-market ranges and photo-wedding bands are secondary sources, dated in our data file. ご祝儀 averages are relationship-weighted from published figures.

The netting insight

The number that matters isn't the venue's quote — it's what's left after your guests' ご祝儀. Because foreign-side guests typically don't bring ご祝儀 (a cultural difference), the offset counts only Japanese-side guests unless you say otherwise. This honest netting is the point of the tool.

What we're careful about

These are ranges, not quotes. Venue estimates famously grow between the first quote and the final invoice (見積もり上振れ) as options are added — the tool says so. And the 婚姻届 (marriage registration) paperwork for international couples varies by nationality and municipality, so our guide pushes you to confirm with your own embassy and ward office rather than trusting a fixed checklist.
